Ashina is not clearly tied to any one specific historical region, but has similarities to several historical regions during this time And if my assumptions from what the wikipedia entry says is correct, then that would put the events of sekiro somewhere along japan's central eastern coast. The sengoku period ended with the forced reunification of japan under the central government that eventually became the tokugawa shogunate, represented in game by the interior ministry.
The name ashina is translated by some researchers as wolf, cf The ashina were a real clan during the sengoku period, actually Tuoba 叱奴 *čino, middle mongol činua, khalkha čono
However, golden contended that derivation from mongolic is mistaken
When ashina became the head of göktürks, they exhibited a tuğ banner with a wolf head over their gate, in reminiscence of its origins. Knowing that the ashina clan was a real thing, i decided to do some research myself just to see how much does sekiro's version of the ashina clan parallel with it's real life counterpart. Isshin staged a coup during the sengoku period and essentially declared ashina its own sovereign state Through genichiro wishing for ashina to be restored to glory and then sacrificing himself he was able to open a gate to the underworld and bring isshin back to life
Genichiro sacrificing himself and isshin climbing out of him represents genichiro being the gate for isshin to return How it brought isshin back in his prime i dont know The only real path to go to other than the top of the castle, is to go down a giant pit in ashina reservoir where you are located at the very beginning in the game But honestly, it’s just best to get to the top of the castle.
At that point in the game any new place you can go to is a place you should go to
So just go to the top of ashina castle, pick a direction, and see where it leads you. You need to go to ashina reservoir, head to the left and jump between the gunner and drummer, go past the drummer to the left and grapple across the abyss to the right. Go to ashina gate where you defeated the horseman, instead of turning left to the idol turn right where you will see some stairs decorated by the lifeless bodies of some violet soldiers Enter the room and you will find a very very interesting guy there, talk to him, help him.
