In fact he was only a servant of melkor/morgoth, who was a former vala and when at his greatest was much more powerful than sauron ever was But after melkor was released from his three ages of imprisonment in mandos, manwë patted him on the head and let him roam around valinor freely Both names refer to the same being
Are they his names in different languages (like gandalf and olorin, or saruman and curunir), and if so, which languages? First of all, melkor was brought to valinor in chains Melkor lost his ability to change his shape after the death of the trees, as of the darkening of valinor notes
Now melkor came to avathar and sought her out
And he put on again the form that he had worn as the tyrant of utumno A dark lord, tall and terrible In that form he remained ever after As for his size, tolkien doesn't say explicitly, but he's certainly large enough so that.
1 melkor is obviously the far greater power, even at his perceived weakest It still took a full on assault by the powers to ensure melkor's end and cast him into the void 5 melkor is the personification of evil It is he who initially causes disharmonious music in the very beginning, leading to all that is wrong and ugly and dark and evil in arda
Yet in spite of this, tolkien describes him as afraid at the sight of ungoliant doing her disgusting things, which to him should just be pleasant and right.
It seems that you absorbed too much of @slytherincess' mindset (you're ascribing meaningful canon interpretation to something that is caused by english language not being a precise instrument) Vala can be a taxonomy term (in which case melkor was one) Melkor and sauron are both ainur, beings which existed before the creation of the universe and, indeed, assisted in it In brief, ilúvatar — god with a capital g — created the ainur and asked them to sing before him.
It is mentioned that melkor is the most powerful of the valar, so what stopped him making his own race The orcs don't count as he simply modified the elves. Then eä was created, and melkor rebelled and was banished or hid in arda Melkor is still very mighty, even counting combat power alone (rather than overall power)
Probably second or third among the valar, the way i understand the work.
