Kathmandu University Geomatics Engineering Society (GES), in association with Open Data for Resilience Initiative (OpenDRI) Nepal organized OSM Mapping Party in Kathmandu University (KU) on 27th April, 2013 Saturday.

Students from different Departments—Geomatics, Civil, Computer Engineering—participated in the event. This program served as a medium for enthusiastic students to get together and share their ideas. There were students who have heard of OSM but didn’t have actual idea what it was all about. Bidur GC, currently studying Geomatics Engineering 2nd year was heard saying, “I have heard of OSM but I didn’t know that the maps were produced not by experts but students like us. I think everyone one should participate because everyone is contributor.”

Program started with a short presentation by Dr. Nama Raj Budhathoki, Lead, OpenDRI Nepal Project. He introduced about OpenStreetMap and OpenDRI, how these are working in Nepal and pointed out the importance of OSM and how we can use it in our day-to-day life. He also explained about their latest work “Map My School”. Poshan Niraula, intern at OpenDRI Nepal shared his working experience with the OpenDRI team.

Presentation was followed by building digitizing work and Treasure Hunt. Most students were busy digitizing their local areas and schools. “Treasure-Hunt was the most exciting one”, said Abhishek Dhungel, a second year Geomatics Engineering student. Winners were awarded with prizes and program was concluded with a vote of thanks from the organizers.
